Hello, I'm Evan and I like cool and weird sounds.

My practice has always encompassed a theoretical, "art music" composition focus alongside a practical, performance based conducting practice.

My music is idiomatic and approachable for the performer while still pushing the possibilities and potential of the musical material.

I attempt to present a flow and transfer of energy and emotion in my music.

To help achieve this I focus on contrasting movement between static and hyperactive textures.

My works are written primarily for voice, solo line instruments or works for large forces. I have focused on more traditional forms, such as the symphony, concerto or opera, but always in an attempt to modify them to my own contemporary view.

I’m strongly influenced by ancient music practice and musics of the pre-baroque. I’m especially interested in the musical, theatrical and sociological traditions of ancient Greece.

I like to experiment with unusual ensemble makeup, regularly composing in a "concerto-grosso” style, pitting soloists against larger forces.

I regularly play with unorthodox staging, theatrical requirements and spatial positioning of sound sources.

Most works are written for specific performers and a lot of my work comes from a desire to collaborate with good friends and remarkable artists, giving them intriguing new musical ideas to explore and communicate to audiences.

I also pride myself on being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. I pride myself on being an openly gay man, dedicated to a deeper diversity in classical music in Australia. This takes form in my personal marketing and artistic statements making it clear that I come from these communities, and writing work that is strongly informed by my sexuality and experience of contemporary life.
