Ten years ago, Kate Millett and James Penn decided opera should make you sweat. Should make you uncomfortable. Should make you feel things you weren't planning to feel when you left the house that evening.
Nobody asked them to do this. Kate took this idea and did it with her own hands, her own money, and a completely unreasonable amount of stubbornness.
More than twenty productions. No safety net. No apologies.
We are throwing the party we deserve — and you're coming with us.
One song from every opera we've ever made. Carmen to Macbeth. Bluebeard to Don Giovanni. Poulenc, Verdi, Maxwell Davies, Offenbach — all of it, one night, one room, one bar that will not close until we say so. And we're ending the night with the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, because if we're going out, we're going out on a Wagner.
This is opera that sweats. Opera that bleeds. Opera that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go until it's shown you everything it's got.
And we need your help to keep making it.
BK Opera has never had a government safety net, or a board of directors telling us what audiences can handle. What we have is a community of artists and audiences who believe, like we do, that opera is one of the most powerful things human beings have ever invented, and that Australia deserves to see what it's truly capable of.
Tonight is a celebration. It's also a fundraiser. Every dollar raised goes directly into the next decade of dirty, dangerous, desperately necessary opera-making.
Buy a ticket. Buy a drink. Buy another drink.
Be part of what comes next.
