Circe and the Ballad of Melierax
For Flute/Piccolo, Clarinet, Piano, Violin and Cello.
—-
Circe, the infamous ‘witch’ of Greek mythology was known for turning men into animals. In this work, mystical and almost violent musical gestures create musical magic, alongside birdlike ballads, named for Melierax. Melierax was Circe's brother, and a sorcerer-king in his own right, of Colchis, a destination of Jason and the Argonauts.
Violence, magic and beauty mix and intertwine in this work.
Premiered by Syzygy Ensemble, August 2011 at Kingston Arts Centre.
